On behalf of the School Artwork Affiliation (CAA) and its Advocacy Committee, I write in help of an open letter from the Center East Research Affiliation (MESA) written on December 18, 2023. As a companion realized society beneath the American Council of Discovered Societies (ACLS), we urge you to uphold and shield tutorial and inventive freedom in your campuses.

Since October 2023, we’ve seen a surge in threats to college, college students, and faculty workers. The present Gaza-Israel battle has generated widespread tutorial and scholastic debate; we name upon you throughout this troublesome time to guard free speech and to defend tutorial freedom for all campus group members. We additionally urge you to chorus from censoring artist exhibitions in your campus galleries and museums.

CAA honors range and displays a unprecedented vary of cultures, views, training, and experiences that make the development of artwork and design integral to our international constituencies and to tradition at massive.

CAA is dedicated to making sure tutorial freedom and freedom of creative expression and exhibition. We agree with MESA that “free speech is essential for any democratic polity, and this country’s institutions of higher education should be places in which even the most controversial and unpopular views can be expressed, debated and criticized. At the same time, all students deserve equal access to education, free from harassment and discrimination. Unfortunately, we are witnessing a dramatic increase in antisemitic, anti-Palestinian, anti-Arab and anti-Muslim harassment and discrimination on our campuses.”       

As college leaders, you bear accountability throughout charged political instances to safeguard tutorial freedom, freedom of expression and creative follow, in addition to the bodily welfare of all members of your group. We urge you to guard college students, college, and workers and honor their proper to freedom of speech with out worry of intimidation, harassment, or retaliation.
